Ascent Trip ReportGudi, Kaekae and I headed out on the Hancock Notch Trail around 9 a.m. The rainy / snowy weather of yesterday had stopped and now it was cloudy with some hints of blue here and there and a slight wind.
The trail was snow covered and we chose to use micro-spikes. That worked pretty well with only the occasional post hole break through as we got higher in elevation.
The river crossings were manageable, mostly by rock-hopping. On one of the larger ones we found a somewhat stable snow bridge to use. Kaekae actually broke through on our return trip, cold boot full on that one.
I changed to snowshoes along the Hancock loop trail because you didn't have to worry about post-holing. The first glimpse of Hancock North peak was a bit daunting as it looked awfully steep! Turns out it is very steep as the elevation rose over 1,000' in the last 900 meters! Not sure if the micro-spikes would have been better than the snowshoes on that very steep part, but by using the trees and branches I did get up to the summit at 12 noon!
Although it was cloudy overhead, the views from the summit of North Hancock were wonderful and there was only a slight wind. It was a bit difficult to follow the trail from North to South Hancock from the few inches that fell yesterday. Arrived at South Hancock at 1pm.
The decent was rather thrilling, straight down and trying not to slide too far too fast! Didn't take long to get back to the loop junction that is for sure.
The first 6km of the hike is very pleasant and easy going, the last kilometer is probably the steepest that I have done so far.
