Ascent Trip ReportKen and I decided to hike Sandwich Dome, Jennings Peak and Noon Pk on 4/24/2011. We both have done Sandwich Dome previously separately but neither of us had a chance to see nice view from the summit. Lately, we enjoy hiking together in order to see gorgeous views from the summit after hike-in. So we picked up this mountain and added Jennigs Peak and Noon Pk. When I looked at the trail description on Whites Guidebook, I really wanted to hike-in from Algonquin Trail from Sandwich Notch Rd. That was the plan until one day before our hike. But I just happened to notice Sandwich Notch Rd is not maintained in Winter time and National Forest web page said it's still closed in the end of April. So we switch to start hiking from Drakes Brook Trail. Soon after hike, we started to postholing with bare boots. So we decided to wear snowshoes. It was some steep hike-in here and there and it kicked my butt. It's 3.5 miles up to the junction of Sandwich Mtn Trail, then, another 1.2 miles to reach the summit of Sandwich Dome. We have great view from the summit. We spent some time to eat lunch, took some pictures, then, started to move on to reach to Jennings Peak. There is spur trail (0.2 mi) to reach to Jennings Peak. We left our backpacks there and hiked up short 0.2 miles. Again, the trail is very steep. We had another great views from there. After then, we came back to the junction of Sandwich Mtn Trail and hiked on it to get to Noon Pk. There were some very steep hike-out section which we needed to take off Snowshoes and change our traction to Microspikes because it was so icy!! One trail section, we had to do some bushwhacking to avoid using very icy trail. During hike-out, we switched our gear several times, we carefully hiked out at icy sections. So we spent more time than we originally expected. We started hike around 9:20am and we ended hike at 4:50pm or so. We had great exercise and fun time together! It was relatively warm day and I wore skirt at the first time during hike in this year in the U.S. I felt so good with breeze at my legs skin. On the way to hike in, there was 1-2 points I had challenge of brook crossing on Drakes Brook Trail and hike out has 1 point I had same situation on Sandwich Mtn Trail.
