Ascent of Sawel Mountain on 2011-04-21
|Date:||Thursday, April 21, 2011|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Location:||UK-Northern Ireland|
| Elevation:||677 m / 2224 ft|
Ascent Trip ReportEasy parking and straightforward approach from the col on the road from Sperrin to the east. Follow the fence line to the summit area and then veer north to the trig point. There is some dispute about whether the historic county line goes over the exact summit or 5 - 40 metres south of the trig point so we visited all possible highpoints, both current and former. Of note the area was strewn with paraphenalia and Gaelic language signs relating to a recent ‘Walk of Freedom’ to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 1981 Hunger Strike.
