Ascent Trip Report

Goal: Boy Scout Ridge

All of the recent rain in Portland made for some pretty potent avalanche conditions up high, and a muddy mess down low. We picked out a spot in between (above the rain, but below timberline) and decided to just climb until we'd gotten a decent exercise.

It was snowing hard, so there wasn't enough visibility to see the summit of Hood, which would normally be dominating the scenery. The wind coming down the White River canyon was pretty brutal; even with wrap-around sunglasses we weren't able to look up for more than a glimpse until we got a ways into the trees.

At 'The Bowl' we transitioned into the trees and out of the winds, then up a steep section (40-50 degrees) onto the spine of the ridge. We proceeded up the ridge until coming into a major clearing with near-cliffs to the east and southeast. We walked out a ways into the clearing, then sought some protection from the wind behind a few thick trees on the northeast side of it while we grabbed some food.

After the quick stop we followed our tracks back down, although the rapidly falling snow nearly masked them by the time we were about halfway back. When we got back to the truck there was 3-4 inches on top of it after about three hours.

End elevation is approximate, but after seeing the ridge from the south climbing route, I'd say we were AT LEAST as high as Timberline Lodge, and most likely a few hundred feet higher. I picked a conservative 6000' for recording purposes.
