Ascent Trip Report

On Saturday we got up at 4am, got going by 5, up past Lake Placid to Heart Lake.

We made it out on the trail by 10, a bit behind schedule but not in a rush.

It was perhaps 25, some clouds, by the time we got to Marcy dam (noon) it was clear, the Sun felt good, the trail was like concrete. We wore the Microspikes only.

We heard while in the high peaks center that you MUST wear the snowshoes or skis, not just have them with you, we had them tied to the packs.

We made it to the Phelps trail in very good time; (about 1pm)it was like walking on a road.

While we were at the junction wouldn't you know it here comes the Ranger!
He was on skis heading to Marcy, while moving past us he told us "The regulation says you must have the snowshoes on" he obviously had to say that, he never stopped, he could see we were well prepared. We had passed 2 guys walking out that didn't have any with them so I am sure he read them the riot act.

We took our time getting up Phelps, I thought it was much easier than Table top. It took about 2 hours.

In the sun areas the trail was mushy and harder to climb.

The views were breathtaking, nice and clear.

The walk out was fast. We had met a guy that was doing Colden and Phelps and was planning to watch the moon rise. It didn't hit me that this was going to be a super moon.
As we were driving home somewhere south of Tupper I saw the rise, wow it was spectacular.

When I signed out I noticed that there were 90 lines filled in for the day, so at 2-3 people that is perhaps 250 people, not surprising it was picture perfect.

Total hike was 9.5 miles in about 8 hours.

The drive back to Utica was tough 171 miles.
