Ascent Trip ReportI used the Chorro Grande Trail (parking on route 33) to ascend to the dirt road leading to the trail to Reyes Peak. That enhanced the physical challenge (not to mention the splendor) of the hike -- but of course the road is gated and locked this time of year anyway. The total ascent from the trailhead was 4,400 feet, give or take a couple dozen feet, and the total trip length was around 13 miles. I saw no other humans the entire way, though I did see what appeared to be fairly recent bootprints.
About .8 miles from the summit, the ground was covered in large patches of snow with a hard, slippery surface. Lacking crampons, I tried to avoid the snow. The weather was gorgeously clear, and it was quite crisp and cool at the summit.
