Ascent Trip ReportOur Coastal County Highpoint Tour (Gulf and Atlantic) for this season is over. Today we headed inland for Atlanta, GA.to visit our grandson Marcus at Georgia Tech, after overnighting in Augusta. What better way to add a bit of adventure to this short drive than to visit a few near-by/easy-accessible County Highpoints, such as Columbia and Morgan.
We traveled west from Augusta on I20 to exit 175, where we drove north on GA150 for 3 miles to the crest-of-the-road and parked the van. This spot is about 100 feet past the white house #4203 on the left and about 250 yards before the sign "Columbia County Line" up the road, at the Cobbham Crossroads.
This corner of the County is confusing and very difficult to identify the exact location of the MC Duffie/Columbia County Line. All one needs to do is look at the evidence ..... The google map, the ground signs such as the "Columbia County Line" sign up the road, the local sheriff's comments (later in this report) and Jon Mann's TR of 2001.
For the purpose of my visit I am assuming that my parking spot is on Columbia County and the County line is about 50 yards to the west at the dirt road.
The PB coordinates puts the spot at a lower elevation 20 yards to the west. There is higher ground to its west at a row of trees, just before the referred-to County Line at the dirt road (40 yards from my parking spot at coordinates 33.55040, 82.43806).
However, I believe the high ground of this area is to the east on my parking spot, at the start of the pine woods 30 yards from the road (near a tree with blue paint), my GPS read 33.55058, 82.43670.
A Sheriff stopped to ask if we were in need of help, he was not aware that this was Columbia's highground, in fact he told us that we were in MC Duffie County, pointing to the "Columbia County Line" sign up the road, as proof.
I have noted in numerous reports that my GPS is very erratic/unreliable when it comes to reading elevation and therefore don't use it for checking elevations. What I found weird today was that both the Sheriff's and my GPS read exactly the same ..... fluctuating between 646 and 648, which according to all information is wrong.
