Ascent Trip Report

My brother Bill and I had tried to find the road to summit in January and couldn't find what we saw on the map we got at the guard shack. On Sunday, March 13, 2011, we left Orange County at 6:30am and took the 15 South to the 79. It's easy to find and the roads getting to the reservation are paved and smooth. The guard shack opened a few minutes early and we paid our $9. It took us 2 hours 15 minutes with a stop for breakfast from OC to guard shack. We knew to follow the Lookout Road. This is a dirt road but is nicely graded and I had no problems in my Hyundai Sonata to a certain point. About 2.5 miles from the Summit we had snow in the road and it was just a little too deep for me to cross it. We set out on foot and about 3/4 mile after that we came across a huge tree that fell across the road so that would have been the farthest we could have gone with the car anyway. From there the road continues to be nice for quite awhile before it turns into a rougher road that would need a high clearance 4x4. A good 4x4 good drive all the way to the parking lot at the top. The road goes up and down with the ups being steep, but not too strenuous. We arrived at the parking lot and went straight for the highpoint, which is right to the watch tower's left. it is a bit of a scramble, but a slight trail is findable. The high point in on a big boulder which is cool and we needed to scale the boulder to get up there. The register was in a pvc pipe on the ledge before you get on top of the cement slab. County Highpointer James Barlow had been there the day before!
