Ascent Trip Report

PB gives 4 areas for this county, I was able to visit only 2 of them.
From I95, exit28, we drove west on SC462 for 15.6 miles (a few jogs on the way) to a right turn on SC601, then north 1.8 miles to the Main Entrance, signed "Pineland Plantation", on the right, on the left is a dirt road signed "S-27-25", From this junction it is .4 miles north on SC601 to the Hampton County Line. The entrance is gated but open on this day, lucky-me.

AREA 1 ..... 500 yards 20 minutes RT.
We drove right into the Main Entrance and made an immediate right (southeast) on a dirt road (signed S-27-27, Stafford Road) for .3 miles to the "Pineland Plantation, Morel" brick-entrance on the left. We continued up the driveway, stayed to the right at the big house, past a few buildings on the right and parked in front of 2 small houses at .25 miles from the brick-entrance.
We went to the 2 small houses and the big house, no one home, 2 very friendly dogs followed me around. From our parking spot I walked 20 degrees magnetic compass line, about 250 yards through an open field/short band of woods/another small clearing/a short distance into the woods to my chosen high ground at 32.63279, 81.16223.

AREAS 2, 3 and 4 .... .5 miles, 25 minute RT to AREA 2 only.
We went back to the Main-Entrance and drove the dirt road (S-27-27) northeast/northwest for .47 miles to the Hampton County Line where a dirt track follows the edge of the worked field, generally east along the County Line. Where the track changes direction to the northwest we went to a house at 100 yards to the right for permission to continue ..... the lady, sitting in the front screened-in porch, said that this wasn't her place, it was owned by the big house to the east, but didn't see any problems with me going up the road.
We drove east along the edge of the field for another .25 miles and parked the van. I walked in the general County Line direction (northeast, staying at the edge of the fields)) for about 400 yards to AREA 2 at a row of trees. There was no way for me to identify the exact location of the County Line, "the" high ground is in the vicinity of 32.64241,-81.16270.
I felt somewhat uneasy without permission and I didn't want to press my luck so I decided to abort and leave the exploring of the other 2 areas for a future visit. This is not a difficult County to stomp in, my feeling was that the owners are very friendly since I didn't see any posted signs.

We just loved today's visit, perhaps our favorite Southern County to date .... a typical Southern Plantation from the past, the big house at the end of a long driveway surrounded by smaller housing/ numerous buildings/equipment for the workers.
