Ascent Trip Report

A very lucky day.

My source of info was Fred Lobdell's TR of 1999 and Michael Schwartz TR 0f 2004. Both reports still apply, only the access has changed.

We approached from the (south) city of Starke, intersection hwy 16/301 in Bradford County. We traveled north on 301 (entered Clay County) for 14.5 miles to CR218 at a stop light. Turned left on CR218 to a Dupont automatic-locked Gate at 100 yards, heavily posted "No Trespassing". We parked to one side and watched huge trucks entering/exiting every 5 minutes, flagged a few for information. We waited around for an hour before getting someone to help us (had our lunch).

Finally the driver of a white pick-up truck, Hilton (a Dupont worker), was very helpful. He couldn't give me the necessary permission so he called his supervisor, who approved our entry on condition that Hilton stay with us the whole time. They were not aware that this area was the Counties highground.
We drove our van, and he followed, west on the concrete road to a height-of-land and a dirt road on the left at about 1.12 miles. We parked here, I walked the dirt road south to a height-of-land at .1 mile and the highground of this area. Hilton stayed back at the van with Rose the whole time.

When I got back to the van I walked back (east) 100 yards then north on a good dirt road about 300 yards to the side of a wooded area (tall pines). I roamed/looked for highground but all seemed flat to me. I believe this is the area refered-to by Fred as "an area south of the road", he meant to say "north".

Hilton followed us to the main gate, I couldn't thank him enough. Another Dupont worker also driving a pick-up truck gave me the Dupont office's phone no. 904 964 1200, suggested I ask for Phil Palmbier (!!! unsure of the spelling) for permission.
