Ascent Trip ReportA lot has changed since Fred Lobdell's RT of 11 years ago and the ensuing TR (in other web sites). I provide here my observations of today's ground conditions. To begin with, the High Point Drive road just north on the intersection hwy 528/1, the Econolodge, the High Point Tower Office Building #400 (on north side/crest of the drive) are all the same. The Amoco Gas Station at the corner of hwy 1 and High Point Drive is now a BP Station, and the ridge behind it has all but been removed, it is now a sand pit. So the PB coordinates puts the spot in the sand pit and therefore no longer the natural Highpoint ..... I found 3 candidate Highpoint Areas that contend for the Highpoint of this area. From the intersection of 528/1 we drove north the very short distance to a right turn on High Point Drive, then east to the crest of the road with High Point Tower #400 on the left. We found our way to the back (northside) of the High Point Tower Building to the upper parking area and parked our van. Here I identified two Areas as possible candidates. Four superb peacocks roamed the parking area, one guy told me that they are fed by the people in the High Point Tower.
Area 1 ..... from the parking I ascended a sand embankment 30 feet to the north, just beyond is the large sand pit. I chose a spot at a large old tree as the high ground of the area 28.40353, 80.75202. I roamed the area before deciding on the highground. Unfortunately I can't measure for exact elevation.
Area 2 ..... at the upper parking there is a walled-in highground in the center of the parking (south of Area 1 and also at a large old tree). My coordinates read 28.40326, 80.75179.
Area 3 ...... is located on the south side of High Point Drive away from the other 2 areas. At the crest of High Point Drive there is a road leading south "Westchester Drive" (across from High Point Tower #400), the house on its corner is numbered #418. Behind it on Westchester Drive is an open wooded lot. I walked to the top of the lot and identified natural highground at 28.40221, 80.75115.
I guess-estimated/concluded that of the 3 Areas, #3 is the highest point in this area, however the question requiring an answer is "Is this the highpoint of the County?". Hopefully another PB better equipped/skilled will be able to confirm my findings.
