Ascent Trip Report

Short walk ...... .4 miles, 30 minute RT.

From the intersection hwy 41/997 (north of Homestead) travel south on 997 for 17 miles to a right turn on Richmond Drive (SW168th Street), sign on corner "Everglade National Park". Travel west 6 miles to a right turn on SW237th Street (Chekika sign) then left on SW160th Street at .62 miles (Chekika Everglades National Park sign). Drive west, pass unmaned Park Entrance gate, stay left the fork and arrive at parking area about 1 mile.

Take any of the 2 boardwalks that lead to the picnic grounds past a gator pond at about 300 yards. The picnic grounds is an open grass area surrounded by thick woods at the summit area. The PB coordinates puts the highpoint on the north side of the clearing. I chose my spot at the edge of the woods 25.61498, 80.58414.
At the south side of the clearing is much higher ground, the rangers Kay and Scott told us that this is artificial, a result of the artisan well and pond that was dug-up in the area.
We saw 2 gators and a number of birds at the pond.
