Ascent Trip Report

I hiked Castle Dome with Ken Russell and Ken Jones. We drove out US Hwy 95 to milepost 55 and then turned northeast on signed paved Castle Dome Mines Road. Zero your odometer. The pavement ends in 1.9 miles, there is a Kofa Wildlife Viewing Area at 5.0 miles, at 8.9 miles pass the Museum and then the road gets a little rougher. At 11.2 miles there is a steep drop off into a wash that requires high clearance, at 11.6 miles take the left fork, and at 13.5 miles park in front of the sign in the wash.

This is a fun hike. Hike up the wash staying to the left. If you come to a 30 ft high dry water fall, you went up the wrong fork, hike back a little and go up the big wash to the north. Stay in the wash about 1.6 miles until you come to a large arrow made out of rocks in the wash pointing to the right. Follow this smaller wash about 50 yds up bare rock to another smaller arrow made out of rocks that points to the left. Climb out of the wash and follow the climbers trail. This trail is faint in places, but it is well cairned. The trail climbs up towards Castle Dome and the spire on the left side. When we got to a place just 50 ft short of the saddle between the spire and Castle Dome, we climbed a Class 3 rocky slope on the right up towards Castle Dome. This is a continuation of the trail. The cairns continue up and around and up with one more short Class 3 section before getting to the summit ridge. Great views from the summit. This was a fun hike without much technical difficulty. We saw about 12 other climbers on the route and we hiked with 3 of them all the way to the summit and back down to the trailhead. Fun day.
