Ascent Trip Report

A drive up to a Communication Tower.

From east of Clermont at intersection 27/50, we drove north on 27 about 5 miles to a right turn on CR561, then north on CR561 2.5 miles to a right turn on Sugarloaf Mountain Road. Drove east up the hill .8 miles to the fenced-in Communication Tower driveway on the left, parked the car ..... just passed a house on the left, mail box #20520, to the south is open land with a number of homes. A number of cyclists were resting from their climb, apparently a favorite cycling route.

I walked the area around the Tower and chose my highpoint at 20 yards west of the fence, 28.64917, 81.73246.

The house just before the Tower has a 250 foot frontage, PB puts the spot on the west side of the house at a Gazebo which looks to have highground (about 70 yards west of my chosen spot).
No one answered the locked gate when we first arrived, luckily as we were ready to leave, a couple returning from their morning walk turned out to be the owners. As soon as they saw us they knew why we were there.

Randy and Carolyn Nobels purchased the place 10 years ago, they are presently working on an addition to the house. Their lot is 250 X 1200 feet deep and there-by have a 360 degree vista, they attempted to purchase the property to the west with no luck. You can see
Orlando 25-30 miles to the southeast across Lake Apopka, they apparently have amazing sunrises and sunsets.
Randy tells me that he has documentation (which he has promised to send me a copy) that shows the highpoint between the gazebo and his driveway, he took me to the spot. Apparently there used to be a post marker at this spot prior to him building the house. I checked his spot against the PB coordinates and they are very close. His spot is now at a lower elevation because of the construction, the gazebo area is not natural as he built up the whole area around it.
If I do get the promised documentation I will amend this TR accordingly.

My chosen spot could well be "The Highpoint". From here we moved on to Hillsborough County to the south of Lakeland.
