Ascent Trip Report

Well -- when planning this trip, I figured that I would not be doing Paulina Peak unless I was getting pooped! And here I was. I was still hoping to climb South Sister, but wasn't sure how much more I could manage. I visited the "Giant Obsidian Flow" nearby before climbing the peak -- it is full of chunks of obsidian 2-3 feet thick! The hike itself is short and easy. There is a road to the top of the mountain, so you can skip the whole hike. It seemed all the other hikers were driving up the road to where the trail crossed, and skipping the first (easy but boring) mile of the trail. At the top of the mountain, there is a micro-scramble to the actual summit above the parking lot. There are some nice views of the obsidian flow and some of the cliffs on the mountain from the trail that the road misses -- of course, I don't know if the road offers any good views that the trail misses.
