Ascent Trip Report

I visited the 4 candidate high point areas of this County.

AREA 1 Eastern most Area on the St James Island Peninsula ..... .5 miles, 20 minutes RT.
We traveled south from Tallahassee on 319/98, driving over the Ochlockonee Bay Bridge. From the Franklin County Line sign at mid-span of this bridge we continued south on 98 for 2.7 miles to a gated dirt road on the left, park here, this is the TH.
Walk the dirt road east .2 miles to a height-of-land (at a N-S ridge), turn right and bushwack south up the ridge 100 yards to the highground, an open pine forest. I picked my spot at 29.93116, 84.39137 and added an orange flag tape marker, PB's coordinates puts the spot at a lower elevation.

AREAS 2, 3 & 4 ..... .8 miles, 35 minutes RT for all 3 Areas.
From Area 1 continue southwest (beautiful drive along the coast, great camping place) on 98 to Lanark Village, turn right onto Spring Street at 13.4 miles, .2 miles left on Oak Street, .2 miles park the car on the side of the road, this is the TH ...... Iowa street is to the left, a sand track to the right.
AREA 2 ... Walk up the sand track on the right 100 yards to the large sand quarry (southeast corner of the quarry). The highpoint area was ahead of you before the quarry, I checked its perimeter and highground is no longer here. This Area should be removed as a candidate.
AREA 3 ... From the southeast corner of the sand quarry (above), walk to the northwest of the quarry at 200 yards where you'll find a woods track with orange/yellow blazes and blocked off with barbed wire, that leads west into the open pine woods. Walk west on this track 150 yards then bushwack south 60 yards to the obvious highground. I chose my spot at 29.88224, 84.60430, 2 large concrete blocks, I added orange flag tape. Walk back to the track.
AREA 4 ... Continue west on the track 150 yards to a height-of-land, turn right (north) 40 yards to highground at 29.88295,84.60635. I marked the spot with orange tape.
On the way back to 98 (on Spring Street) we saw/photographed a beautiful 1959 Edsel, just sitting there collecting rust.
