Ascent Trip ReportThe trail to Prospect Peak starts from the Cinder Cone trail about 1/4 mile from the Butte Lake Campground. I remember it as being fairly gentle -- but I wonder why it took so long to go only a little more than three miles to the summit. The summit is a fairly flat plateau with some trees, so there are some open views and some obstructions. I signed the register and observed I was the first visitor for 13 days. The view of Cinder Cone and the lava flows and cinder deposit near it was from the place where the trail first comes up on the summit, opposite the Geological Survey marker and register.
The register was in a tin can held down by a 10-15 pound bar of steel -- I admire the fortitude of the person who lugged that up there!
