Ascent Trip Report

At age 50 this was my first Norwegian summit! We were in the country to share in Petter Bjorstad’s 60th birthday celebrations scheduled for the weekend.

We started at Highway 41, at N59.37305 E8.53473, 93m: locked gate. The route initially follows the forest road east. When the road descends slightly, fork L (small cabin at junction), following another forest road steeply uphill (passing another cabin on L). In 3km from the trailhead, take a steep track L (N), uphill to reach a cabin (visible from the track).at N59.36854 E8.58755, 561m.

At this point we fitted snowshoes. Above the cabin there is supposed to be a track but nothing was visible beneath the blanketing snow and we headed more or less direct for the summit following the GPSr pointer. Initially the slope is steep and tree cover relatively dense. The snow was approx 1m deep and too soft for easy progress even with snowshoes –we lacked the skills and equipment to ski the peak. Higher up the trees thinned and the snow consistency improved. We kept R of some attractive pink granite crags, then an easy snow gully led up L towards the summit. The final summit cone is fairly steep but we edged up in snowshoes without difficulty (boots would have been equally OK: no need for crampons).

The slabby summit has a large cairn and a nice view. A cold breeze was blowing and to ensure reaching the forest road before darkness we soon headed down, back the way we came. Descent was much easier and quicker than the ascent although still strenuous in the deep snow.

We were back at the car around sunset and spent the night in a nice self-catering room near Bo on Highway 36. Next day we climbed Roan.

Timings: Trailhead 1025, summit 1425-1435, trailhead 1625. Total distance 15km (GPSr); temps -15C at start, -9C at end.
