Ascent Trip Report

Nice hike with the SoCal Hikers and Peakbaggers group. Started out at Cactus Spring TH and made our way South past the Calcetite Mine on a well marked trail - originally a jeep road, but narrowed to a footpath. Another mile later, we were in (what I think was) Horsetheif Creek.... Lots of descending, which is always ominous at the beginning of a long hike. Quickly we climbed out of the canyon and made our way to Cactus Spring through some narrow trails, a long wash - and eventually to the historical flats. I wish that I had read more about this particular spot BEFORE we hiked it. Historical significance to the Cahuilla Indians, and several points of interest are a short distance away from the trail. Walking along the trail, we encountered frequent posts with crude arrows pointing towards the mountain. After 5 or so miles, we entered a broad wash and walked around Peak 4999 (very prominent feature on the right) and up alongside the ridgeline leading to Martinez Peak. Found BM 51-- along the trail and hooked a left up to the peak. Followed a well ducked path - STEEP, but relatively easy to navigate. No speciic trail - bu the ridgeline is easy enough. Class 2 rock scramble with the summit block being a class 3 bit. Beautiful views, but NOT for someone who is afraid of heights. Returned the same way - ran out of daylight and used headlamps for the final mile or so. Easy to find the trail, in spite of the dark and headlamps. Lots of fun - great hike with BEAUTIFUL views! HPS register is in the rocks just south of the summit block.
