Ascent Trip Report
There are 8 Candidate High Point Areas for this County, all on/near the east-west Jasper-Newton/Orange County Line. It will take more than one visit to complete, I will have this one only TR revised accordingly with each visit.
VISIT #1 DATED 2011-01-15 --- TO AREA 1 ONLY .....
We are on our way to visit our son in the Woodlands, Texas.
After visiting Cameron County Highpoint in LA we found our way west on I10 into Texas, stopping at the Welcome Center for information (built at the edge of a swamp). From there we continued west on I10 to exit 813 where we traveled north to Area 1 as noted below. After the visit we checked out the area before driving to Beaumont for the night.
AREA 1 .... a drive into a private driveway on the Orange/Newton County Line.
From I10, exit 813, we drove north on Hwy 62 to a main intersection with 12 (stop light). We continued through the intersection on 62 (in Orange County) for 2.8 miles to a right turn (just passed the Orange/Newton Co Line) on CR3139 in Newton County (goggle names it Old Champion Road), at 100 yards we turned right on CR3033 and re-entered Orange County where the road name changes to Wade Road and at 350 yards turned into a private driveway on the right (mailbox across the road read #833).
The owner with 4 friendly dogs was working in his garage. After I told him the reason for our presence, he smiled, "Highpoint!! you won't find any Highpoints in this part of Texas, after a good rain there is water all over this area."
He continued to tell me that he built up the whole area around his house and garage, "I dug that pond (pointing to it behind the house) for the dirt." I do agree that this area is table-like.
I chose a spot near the road at a big tree, my GPS read 30.24213, 93.89249.
"ENJOY THE LITTLE THINGS ......FOR ONE DAY YOU'LL REALIZE THEY WERE THE BIG THINGS."
