Ascent Trip ReportWas told that there was a USGS Survey Marker at the peak of Hoffman, and that it would take approximately 1:30 to summit (approx 3 miles one way). Grabbed a lightweight pack and prepared to run up the mountain - I gave myself exactly 1 hour to reach the peak and then turn around. HARD going and Agns tried to keep up, but eventually yelled that she would just wait for me on the side of the trail and meet me on the way down. Did not stop or pause - just kept running up switchbacks. Burning lungs due to elevation... and my FIRST glimpse of Half Dome was on the flanks of Hoffman Peak. When I reached the plain and slanted saddle area, I could see antenae on the peak towards the left. Got the the base of the peak and looked for the easiest route up.... no ducks and VERY exposed rock scramble. At :48 minutes and about 50 feet from the summit I had to stop - the going was too trecherous - above a class 3 scramble at this point - and I just didn't feel safe. Felt that I had failed in a way, but also proud of being safe. Oh well - thought the marker could be on a peak located to the East - but it was significantly lower.... Ran around the meadow below the summit and was prepared to descend, when I met two guys who were running up to bag the peak. They told me that Agnes was waiting for me, but asked if I wanted to bag the peak with them. I told them that we had 15 minutes, otherwise I had to turn around.... We climbed - only Mike made it to the top with me - his brother turned around half way up because of the difficulty. Stood atop the peak, took a few pictures. Looked for an alternate down on the West side of the mountain and descended for 5 minutes until we came do a dead end and 3000+ foot drop. Re climbed to the top and descended the way we came. Ran down the mountain as the sun was setting. Hit the switchbacks just as the sun dipped below the horizon - and coudln't find Agnes. Long story short - Agnes thought she could find her way down and accidentally walked off the trail. We manged to have satelite reception on our phones and established contact with the group at base camp. Overall - everyone was safe and the three of us met Agnes back at May Lake - about 30 minutes after the sun had set.
