Ascent of Volcan Mountain in 2009-11| Date: | November, 2009 | | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | | Peak: | Volcan Mountain | | Location: | USA-California | | Elevation: | 5719 ft / 1743 m |
Ascent Trip ReportHave climbed this peak 3X, but this account was the first. Parked at TH and walked past beautiful Iron Works formation. First 1.5 miles to the gate are constant up, but not technically difficult. Quick hop of the gate and then another 2 miles to the summit area. Bear RIGHT once emerging onto Alpine Meadows, past the ruins of the weather observation station.... Follow the old jeep trail to the summit, where the Anza Borrego Desert, Salton Sea is visible. You can see Cuyamaca Peak, and overlook Banner Pass. The Tacan is apparent directly to the north, along with a building of sorts. Found several different triangulation markers, although nothing that is stamped with "US Geological Survey". Very windy plain, but had a nice snack on a bench overlooking Julian. This is our favorite summit to climb. NOTE - there is a closed gate that warns people to NOT Treaspass. There are guided tours of Volcan on some weekends by the private land holders who own the preserve. WE've never had a problem navigating the gate, and have sometimes seen otehr people at the summit as well.
