Ascent of Whiteface Mountain on 2011-01-02
|Date:||Sunday, January 2, 2011|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Location:||USA-New York|
| Elevation:||4865 ft / 1482 m|
Ascent Trip ReportI started the ascent around 8:45 from ASRC. The ASRC trailhead wasn't at the end of the parking lot as indicated in the 13th edition HP ADK guidebook, but in the middle of the hiking parking lot. Descending from there, you reach a junction with a dirt road ascending up toward the ASRC. Instead, you take the left junction to a small clearing containing some type of electronic container and an antenna. The trail starts it's ascent up marble mountain at this point. The ascent isn't bad at all, but a constant and steady bee-line climb up; was at the junction with the willmington trail in no time, 0.9mi vs 2.2mi from reservoir, The ascent up whiteface from ASRC was very tame for a HP. Reached the junction with esther about 2 mi, very easy and esther was marked. I proceeded up whiteface with plans to get esther on the way back. I think the hardest part was going up the stairs itself to the summit, was very windy and icy, a bit blood-pumping. On the return, i decided to take the road back to the point of the willmington trail that interesects with the road for a little variation. The problem was I couldnt find it! I felt like an idiot, I must have descended too far, so I did the remainder of the hike down the road. This mistake took esther off the table, adding an extra 1.6mi back to my car at the ASRC.
Microspikes were needed from the start up marble. Snowshoes recommended around the esther junction to avoid postholing and ruining the trail. Returning on the closed highway, snowshoes are essential for the first 2 miles of the descent, where it then peters to thin ice and light snow.
