Ascent Trip ReportFrom Leg 1 continued along the ridge to the Middle peak. As mentioned previously, the trail was not broken in and I was the first to take this route since the most recent snowfall. At the bottom of the saddle I lost the trail and stayed right (facing the Middle peak direction) and got into a bit of a muddle. GPS showed me on the trail still, and I scouted 30 feet around col, but could not connect with the trail. I tried to bushwhack up, but could only come to a point where the pines were so thick I was forced to go left or right. It is also worth mentioning that these trails have few blazes and I did not see (or notice) any on this section. In fairness you are warned of this upon entering the Sandwich wilderness, so caveat emptor.
After about 20 mins I was getting nervous, as I did not relish going turning back and going down the South Slide (though it was definitely doable with care). I did the sensible thing and backtracked to the last certain part of the trail. After a few other attempts, noticed the trail tended left, not right. Ironically I noticed that one of my dead ends was no more that 30 feet from the trail, which starkly reminds me of the limitations of the GPS.
