Ascent Trip Report

I drove up the road to Conners Camp, needing to stop and put the chains on about a mile in due to ice (even with snow tires). I was expecting a few others to be out as well, but the dozens (hundreds?) that I saw throughout the day came as a shock. It was a beautiful partly sunny Saturday with enough snow for sledding.

The trail was well marked with blue diamonds from near the parking area (there are actually two right near each other) nearly the entire way to the top, and plenty of tracks as well. The East Ridge Trail appears to get heavy use all year round, and is likely well maintained in the warmer seasons. Even with plenty of snow there were only a few obstacles, all likely recent. There were 3-4 very generous and widely spaced switchbacks, depending on how one counts them, and a pair of signed junctions.

There is a group of towers at the summit and some auxiliary buildings, all unremarkable. The view, however, is fantastic! The Coast Range stretched out to the north and south, all significantly shorter than Marys Peak as far as I could see. The Willamette Valley was easily visible to the east, with a layer of fog gathered up against the Cascade foothills and a line of the lower Cascades visible above it. The stratovolcanoes were shyly shrouded in high clouds, with a band of blue sky above. It was a really cool clear-cloud-clear-cloud-clear pattern that I hadn't seen before. To the west there was an oncoming cloud bank with precipitation below. I think a sliver of the Pacific Ocean was visible, as there was a large, featureless area at a great distance to the WNW that didn't look like sky; with all of the broken cloud cover it was difficult to be certain. It is reported that the ocean is visible from the summit.

Starting the new year off right! : )
