Ascent Trip Report

I started at Quail Springs TH and cut SW across the desert and up a wash over into Johnny Lang Canyon. This first section was done with a group of rock climbers headed up to a climb in the same area (led by legendary JT first ascender Todd Gordon). I ended up cutting up the west side of Johnny Lang Canyon to Peak 5405. I then dropped down to a saddle to the southwest and made my way up the SE Ridge of Quail. I ate just below the summit in a spot with no wind as the wind along the high ridges was pretty strong and cold. After I finished eating, I made my way up the last 300 vertical feet to the summit. Just below the summit I ran into Heath, a guy I work with, and his brother. We chatted on the summit for a few minutes, took some pics, and signed the register. From the summit we all made our way down the SE ridge together until I split north to descend the canyon to the NW of Peak 5405. It was pretty good terrain all the way down until about 1/2 a mile before the flats when it got all brushy. The brushy section was just over a quarter mile, so no big deal. I then made my way across the flats back to Quail Springs on the trail, meeting the rock climbers I had ran into earlier in my hike.
