Ascent Trip ReportTrailhead at 17.84887S, 67.39106W, 3725m, GPSr. To get there from Rte 1, from N, arrive at roundabout at N end of Oruro (domed structure in centre of roundabout), turn R, look for dirt road on R at (17.92867 S, 67.1290 W), turn R at that point and then immediately fork L. Dirt road bends 45 degrees R, then bends L to become paved road - head L (west) on pavement towards mountain.
After approx 30km, turn off to TH is (17.85152 S, 67.39999 W). Turn R here. Follow track (now skirting S base of mountain); look for smaller track on L at (17.85032 S, 67.39161 W). Drive c.200 m to primitive structures : this was our trailhead.
Climb: Cross small fields N; and head steeply up. At (17.84694 S, 67.39132 W) find rocky path slanting up to the left. Follow to (17.84725 S, 67.39522 W) at 3888 m. Path bends right, up the ridge. Find cairn at (17.84552 S, 67.39496 W). Descend approx. 15 m to cross shallow ravine, then head uphill aiming just to the right of obvious skyline rocky bluff, mainly keeping R of small walled fields.
Reach south summit (4,386 m GPS reading) at (17.82910 S, 67.3880 W) with ring of stones. Continue north to saddle, descending perhaps 20m and then reach north summit (4,395 meters GPS) at (17.82541 S, 67.38651) Cairn. It is possible to miss out the S summit, paeticularly on the return, by taking careful aim (I had recorded a GPS track on the way up).
NOTE: the GPX track is very low resolution and extends to the main highway at Oruro.
Allow 4 hours round trip with 3.6 km one way distance by GPS track. YDS Class 2.
This was the first acclimatisation summit on a trip whose main goal is to ascend Ojos del Salado and then for three of us, Aconcagua. We continued 2 days later with Cerro Wila Chanca.
