Ascent Trip Report

Rode Mountain Bike along gated USFS Road 67 to Sucker Brook Trail(40 min), then jogged 1 mile to Long Trail. The Sucker Brook Trail (2020',1 mile) was an easy ascent along an old logging road of a bit springtime wet and muddy. The Long Trail north to summit (1.8 mile) became snow covered (1' to 2') and difficult, indistinct to keep to in col, false summit (2828') and snow-packed trail a half-mile beyond to true summit. The Moose I bumped into just beyond col was a distinct Bullwinkle moment of legs all a twirl like a spinning top going 180 degrees (a bulk of four feet as one spinning), us nose-to-nose tummy up over my head (i'm all of 5'4") waiting to jump which way till he spins away from me in the blink of an eye. I yell, "Where are U going? We haven't joshed." The trail had shown track and scat sign, and had finally found trail to jog again in time to hear clop-clop of hoof beat before our bumping. I enjoyed the moment, watching a young'un going away and continued my half-mile to summit. On the return, rested a brief moment beyond trail junction at Sucker Brook Shelter finishing (5.6 mile) jog in about 2 hours. The ride back to gate by bike took 20 minutes all downhill (3.8 miles one way).
