Ascent Trip ReportA short walk on a grass track at the northeast corner of the County ...... .4 miles, 15 minutes RT.
We left our Syracuse Hotel this morning surprised to have overcast skies with some sun, the forecast had called for rain and snow. A great day for County Highpointing in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region Of NY State. Unfortunately we will have to skip a few Counties due to no-information, as reported yesterday I left behind my main source of information, Gary Fallesen's book. For this first County we had Bob Packard's TR of 2001 and PB's coordinates.
We traveled south on I81 to exit 9, then west on hwy 221 (at the cute town of Marathon) a good distance to a T-junction with hwy 200. We turned left on 200 and drove south 1.3 miles to another T-junction with hwy 38 at Hartford Mills. We made a left on 38 and in 100 yards a right on Matson Road, a rough dirt road which climbs/winds 1.6 miles to Robinson Hollow Road where we turned right and in 300 yards another right on Creamery Road. We drove north for .25 miles to a gated grass driveway on the left, parked here, this was the TH .... the summit is to the northwest at about 350 yards. Robinson Hollow and Creamery Roads are both very good gravel roads, so perhaps there is a better way up here than Matson.
I walked the grass track west/north to the summit at 350 yards, a large fairly flat grass area with a small trailer and a picnic table, good views in most directions. Communication Towers can be seen over the trees in the distance to the north. I picked my spot at GPS 42.39645, 76.22219.
On the way out we drove south on Creamery Road 1.2 miles to a left on Bingham Road which descended south 1.4 miles to hwy 79, on our way to Ithaca, Tompkins County. The descent on Bingham is rough and perhaps worse than Matson, one should try Robinson Hollow.
"A FALL IS AN UNPLANNED DESCENT."
