Ascent Trip Report

Trip Report for Clarion County, Pa.

November 27, 2010

I followed the, as usual, superb directions in Mike Schwartz’ County High Pointers trip report with a minor variation at the end. Just before the dead end (on S. Work Drive) in his report I took a right on Summerville for 0.7 mi. and then another right on McKisson for another 0.7 mi. This dead ends at two gates leaving you about half a mile west of the two high points. One gate appears to go to a private home; the company that erected the microwave tower on the northern summit put up the other. A sign reads “Private No Entrance” but I did not see any “No Trespassing” signs at the gate or beyond. A road leads ENE for about 0.2 mi. then intersects another forest road that heads south another 0.2 mi. to the tower area. From there a partially overgrown use trail heads south to the other high point slightly less than a half mile away. Someone had attached a piece of bright orange cloth to a tree exactly at the point you need to head off the use trail and bushwhack SE toward the summit. Mike Schwartz believes the northernmost of the two points is the higher of the two. I concur based on observation and on GPS readings (about 20 feet higher around the tower), although I also concur that the southern point is much more scenic.
