Ascent Trip ReportThis one was probably the wrong mtn for the conditions. The Wrong Trousers! Anyway, with a larger party than the usual solo or solo+1 that I have for most winter trips I opted for a slightly higher and more strenous trip than I might have normally given that we are in the November transition period. I also wanted to avoid a lame logging road peak for our winter "guests". So I opted for Lichtenberg which I had heard was a nice winter trip. What I failed to properly account for was the conditions. The mtn was slathered in fresh powder with no consolidation. While the slopes we went up were run of the mill Cascade terrain, the brush was not quite covered by the new snow and the snow that was there provided no support. Postholing and sliding snow was the order of the day. Because of this, we made fairly mediocre time and were at the lake around noon. Considering the lame weather, short daylight and poor snow we thought it best to bag this one for another day. Oh well. Probably if I had known how lame the snow would be I would have picked a low angle mtn. But then again, low angle means usually a roadwalk and those are not the most thrilling. Oh well. You win some, you lose some. Or if it is 2010, you lose almost all of them. Maybe later in winter I'll be back for this one.
