Ascent Trip ReportParked at turn out. The infamous "smallest church" and little white sign are there - so easy to find. Nobody else wanted to do this on a crummy, cold, windy, drizzly day but me. Took half day off to climb several nearby HPs (including PA) since i was in Pittsburgh on business trip. Had just finished driving to, and bagging 3 HPs in PA including the state HP. I made each one into a hike and had about 1,100 feet of vertical in (trying to break in some new stiff mountaineering boots).
The hike was cold and the leaves were all down. The litter appeared to show more than 90% of woods was oak (primarly red oaks with some white oak). The trail is well marked. Their are some neat WV-MD concrete markers along the ridge line. Near the actual HP of MA is a nearly identical elevation boundary marker that was set in 1910 (Marker #3). It stands about 3 feet tall and kind of neat. The actual MA HP has a picnic table and mailbox log in. Log shows i was the only one to climb it today and a nice sign. Suppose the view over the clearing would have been nice IF it had not been cloudy.
Over 1800 feet for the day to bag 4 peaks and get some exercise not bad for this part of the country. The drive out through WV was amazing. Take note...need to come back and climb the small mountains in WV area. They are steep and very pretty. 3 hours back to the hotel. Probably was 7 hours in the car total and 3 hours hiking for the day. State HP#14 ( i think) Texas, later this week.
