Ascent of Palomar Mountain on 2010-11-17
|Date:||Wednesday, November 17, 2010|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||6140 ft / 1871 m|
Ascent Trip ReportLeft my home in coastal San Diego at 0440 hr and arrived at the trailhead in Oak Grove at 0600 hr. Started the hike at 0604 hr. via the Oak Grove Trail. Take Woodland Valley Road behind the Fire Station and that leads to the trail. Oak Grove Trail winds steeply up the hillside and joins Oak Grove (Truck) Trail, which is closed to vehicles, btw. I reached this junction at about 0715 hr. This part of the trail winds around the mountain but is not as steep. Eventually the Oak Grove Trail links up with the Palomar Divide trail, which winds up to the summit lookout. I reached the lookout tower at 0911 hr., and it was closed to pedestrians. There was a USFS ranger on it however. Spent ten minutes at the summit, with beautiful, clear, and warm weather, and headed back down. I arrived back at my car at 1147 hrs. Aside from the ranger at the summit, and someone driving up to service the portapotty at the summit, I was the only one on the mountain. The Oak Grove Route is less popular but more challenging and long (13.5 miles total).
