Ascent of Moores Knob on 2010-11-06| Date: | Saturday, November 6, 2010 | | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | | Motorized Transport to Trailhead: | Car | | Peak: | Moores Knob | | Location: | USA-North Carolina | | Elevation: | 2579 ft / 786 m |
Ascent Trip ReportMoore's Knob is not a tall mountain, but its cliffs rival any in NC. The 360-degree view from the tower is well worth the climb. On this brisk fall day, I could see 100 miles of the Blue Ridge in NC and VA, plus the skylines of Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Charlotte.
I arrived at 3pm and the visitor center advised that it might be too late to get to the summit of Moore's Knob before the gates closed at 6pm. That turned out to be plenty of time to bag the HP, though I did it as an out-and-back rather than following the 5-mile Moore's Knob loop.
For campers, the summit hike would be 1.3 miles. Day hikers are not allowed to park in the campground, and it's almost 2 miles from the lakeside parking area--3.8 miles round trip. Beyond the campground, the trail climbs quickly (over 600 stone steps) to the lookout tower on the summit.
