Ascent Trip ReportFrom the junction of US 119 and PA 36 in Punxsutawney, drive east a few blocks on 36 and turn right (S) onto Woodland Avenue, marked by signs for Gobblers Knob. Follow Woodland, climbing steadily, until you come to a large Mormon church at the top of the hill. Take the to a large parking lot at the rear of the church, only a few feet from highest ground. Look around for any sign of Punxsutawney Phil, but he will elude you, yet the topo shows this point as Gobblers Knob.
Punxsutawney's dirty little secret--Phil does not live at the summit of Gobblers Knob, but rather on a slope nearby. Exit the church driveway, turn left and continue south on Woodland Avenue Extension, which bears right at the next intersection. Drive a short distance SW and finally see large signs for Punxsutawney Phil's lair on the left. Enter a substantial park and there see his famous den, of course totally deserted on this November day. The den area will look familiar to those who have seen the Groundhog Day festivities on TV or in the eponymous movie. Punxsutawney itself will look unfamiliar, as the movie was filmed in Woodstock, IL.
