Ascent Trip Report

There are three high points in Lawrence County. Find instructions for reaching each on the County High Pointers Organization web pages.

The site near Portersville is owned by the farmer across the road. I saw a car in a driveway across the road with a woman in it, so I walked across to ask if she knew who owned the property. She pointed at a man working in a barn just behind her. A typical conversation ensued:
"Is it OK if I climb that hill on your property across the road?"
"You want to do what?"
" I just want to walk up that hill and walk back down."
"Why do you want to do that?"
"I'm a high pointer and that's the high point for Lawrence County."
Pause. Looks at the fellow next to him (maybe his son) who shrugs. Looks back at me.
"OK, I guess."

The second site is next to a transmission tower. After walking around a bit with my GPS altimeter, the highest point appeared to be on the property line of the house next door. There's a USGS metal post marker in the bushes there.

The third site is in the woods belonging to a rod and gun club. My GPS readings were about 7-8 feet higher for this one than the other two. So, although it's totally lacking in any scenic charm, it's probably the real county high point.
