Ascent Trip ReportWe drove our rented car up Haleakala in the pre-dawn darkness and were amazed at all the people up there. The entire road was kind of a circus, with downhill bicycle tour companies and all their customers everywhere. We could not even find a place to park, with all the turnouts high on the mountain full with cars and tourists, all drawn by the famous "Sunrise on Haleakala".
We managed to park and rest for a bit, and once the sun was up we drove to the very summit and walked around. The wind was extremely intense and we had to put on all of our clothes to stay warm, and we even saw some ice crystals in the sand. After touching the highest rocks and looking at the visitor center, we went for a short hike down into the crater, which helped us avoid the crowds and the winds.
From the summit of Red Hill, the vast crater of Haleakala sprawls out below to the east (1998-11-17).
