Ascent Trip ReportA short walk up a woods road ...... 1 1/4 miles, 35 minutes RT.
From the South end of Livermore, junction of Hwy #4/108 at the Sunoco Station. Drive on Hwy #108 west for 2 miles to a right turn on Shackley Hill Road which dead-ends at .6 miles. To the left is a large house with a number of buildings, property of John Castonguay ...... in the logging/trucking business, phone number 207 897 5945). The summit is due north behind this property.
Yesterday, around noon hour, we called Castonguay for permission to enter his property only to get an answering machine. We drove to the house anyway with the hopes of finding him home, luck wasn't on our side, so we returned late afternoon and found him home. He gave us the necessary approval, pointing to a woods road a few hundred feet past the buildings, saying,
"That's the road to the summit, you can park just to the right of it, it's a very short walk."
We thanked the hospitable young gentleman, told him we'd be back in the morning.
The woods road ascends/winds the south slope of the mountain 3/4 mile to the summit. The wooded summit is in a small open area with no views, a blue plastic drum to one side. At the last switchback a short distance before the summit a pathway beside a huge rock with a cairn on top, leads to a west side lookout over Nelson Pond.
"KEEP CLOSE NATURE'S HEART ..... BREAK AWAY ONCE IN A WHILE TO CLIMB A MOUNTAIN OR SPEND TIME IN THE WOODS. WASH YOUR SPIRITS CLEAN." ....... John Muir
