Ascent Trip ReportThis is a driveup and in fact if you were so inclined you could pull a true Martinization on this one. I approached up Derby Canyon from the S. At a junction at 3000', I was temporarily befuddled as the L fork had dual No T signs and the road sign seemed to indicate that this was FS 7402. I wanted to stay on 7400. I drove the other road for a minute and quickly determined that it was not right. So I went back to the other road and went up that. I think the signage refers only to the surrounding land as this otherwise seems to be a USFS ROW and the houses around there are not even right on the road. It seems like some the signs are the misleading type from locals who are annoyed that the public uses the public's own land. The road sign also seemed to be pointing the L fork out as 7402 when it is the R fork that is 7402 but this was somewhat unclear. Whatever. Continuing on, I drove the road past a little eroded section at 4500' and up to the mapped road junction on the ridge at 5200'. One quick rough patch hinted that the road might get worse but in fact it was good. I expected the final spur to be bermed or gated but in fact you can drive to the top where a little looping turnaround encircles the HP. This appears to be where a lookout once was and in fact there is a ramp that would get you right to the top. This could be a nice place to car camp in good weather. The road might be high clearance though veteran mtn drivers with sedans could make it I think.
