Ascent Trip ReportI hiked Mt Hoffman from the May Lake trailhead in Yosemite NP. This is a great trail from the parking area to the lake. From the lake the trail is not marked but it stays on the south side of the lake through the camping area next to the pit toilet and then continues west. This is still a great trail that climbs steadily up towards Mt Hoffman. On the climb you can see a couple big blocky outcroppings that appear to be the summit. They are not. As you gain the summit plateau, you can see Hoffman's thumb ahead and the high point is out on the point to the right of the thumb. You can see a small radio antenna on the summit. I crossed the plateau, said "Hi" to the resident mormot and then scrambled up the big blocky granite rocks to the summit. There doesn't seem to be a correct way to climb up the last 200 ft to the summit. It is just picking a line and scrambling. If you run into a dead end, just traverse a little and find another route. Great views from the summit. This is a popular hiking trail and I saw at least 50 other hikers between the trailhead and May Lake. Only 2 hikers past the lake.
