Ascent Trip Report

A gravel road walk from the south side to Mont Rougemont followed by a short bushwack to Mont Rougemont-Point 370, Les Maskoutains County Highpoint (the reason for this visit). ....... 5km, 1 1/2 hour RT for both summits .

This is our second visit to Mont Rougemont. The first time was back 1977 when we were young, strong and adventurous. The altitude's thin air, the amazing panorama of the Saint Lawrence valley to the west and the warm sun put us in such an enamored mood, that we ended up having an amazing interlude, on the west/grass slopes of the mountain. One of those times that stays with you for the rest of your life. Today however, times have changed.... Rose stays back at the car while I slowly huff and puff all alone to the summit. Anyway today's reason for the visit was Les Maskoutains County Highpoint.

My second visit to this summit.
I left the TH (see the Driving Directions below) climbing generally northeast to northwest on the winding Gravel Road for about 2.5km to the summit of MONT ROUGEMONT with its two Communication Towers and a small building. The view today was overcast/poor, couldn't see Montreal.

My first visit to this summit.
From the summit of Rougemont I went generally east and headed/bushwacked to the MASKOUTAINS COHP , a stones throw away at a few hundred meters. I stayed away from the track that heads north a short distance to a lookout atop a vertical cliff.
After a short distance you drop steeply to a col then back up to the Highpoint. Except for the very steep section the going is easy in open woods. The wooded summit is obvious, offering no views. I would find out on my descent that the easiest approach to this Highpoint is as follows ..... From the summit's Communication Towers descend 150M on the Gravel Road to the first sharp bend to the right (straight ahead is the summit of MONT ROUGEMONT-POINT 370, generally east at about 100M), a herd path enters the woods here.

From Autoroute 10, exit 37, we found our way (hwy #227 and #112) to the Village of Rougemont. At the church I traveled north on Rue Principal to the north side of the Village where the road becomes Rang de La Montagne, at 4.3km I turned right on Chemin du Moulin, to its cul-de-sac at .5km. and the start of a gated gravel Road with a large white sign "Terrain Prive" ...... this was my the TH(45.46409,-73.07660).
Parking is on the left at the large private lot for the Cabane de Sucre. The owner allows parking. This is a very popular multi purpose trail (hiking, runners, biking, horse riding).

ADDENDUM #1 DATED 2016-09-30
I came back to Rougemmont for my 4th visit to hang a Canister on POINT 370 (Les Maskoutains COHP) to hopefully record future County Highpointer visitors. The colors just starting to change, should have timed this visit a little later, people out in apple orchards picking apples - the nicest time of the year to visit the area.
