Ascent Trip ReportA gravel road walk from the south side to Mont Rougemont followed by a short bushwack to Point 370, Maskoutains County Highpoint. ....... 5km, 1 1/2 hour RT for both summits .
This is our third visit to Mont Rougemont, the second to this summit. The first time was back 1977 when we were young, strong and adventurous. The altitude's thin air, the amazing panorama of the Saint Lawrence valley to the west and the warm sun put us in such an enamored mood, that we ended up having an amazing interlude, on the west/grass slopes of the mountain. One of those times that stays with you for the rest of your life. Today however, the times have changed, Rose stays back at the car while I climb alone. Anyway today's reason for the climb was the Maskoutains County Highpoint.
I left the TH climbing generally northeast to northwest on the winding Gravel Road for about 2.5km to the summit of "MONT ROUGEMONT" with its two Communication Towers and a small building. The view today was overcast/poor, couldn't see Montreal.
I set out generally east and headed/bushwacked for the MASKOUTAINS COUNTY HIGHPOINT "POINT 370", a stones throw away at a few hundred meters. Stay away from the track that heads north a short distance to a lookout atop a vertical cliff. After a short distance you drop steeply to a col then back up to the Highpoint. Except for the very steep section the going is easy in open woods. The wooded summit is obvious, offering no views. I would find out on my descent that the easiest approach to this Highpoint is as follows ..... From the summits Communication Towers descend 100M on the Gravel Road to the first sharp bend to the right (straight ahead is the summit of Point 370, generally east about 100M), a herd path enters the open woods here and a sign on a tree reads "Aire Protege".
DIRECTIONS TO THE TH Find your way to the Village of Rougemont and from the church travel north on Rue Principal to the north side of the Village where the road becomes Rang de La Montagne, at 4.3km turn right on Chemin du Moulin, to a cul-de-sac at .5km. and the start of a gated Gravel Road with a large white sign "Terrain Prive" ...... this is the TH, park here.
"THERE IS ONLY ONE PERFECT TRAIL .... AND THAT TRAIL IS AHEAD OF YOU."
