Ascent Trip Report

I set up 4 consecutive days' day hike plans in Maine between 9/9-12 2010. Ed.P joined my hiking events.

Day-1 is to hike to Begelow Range in order to cover 3 peaks: The Horns, West Peak and Avery Peak.
Day-2 is to hike to Saddleback / Saddleback-the Horns in Rangeley
Day-3 is to hike to Mt Kathadin to peakbag Hamlin, Baxter and Pamola Peaks.
Day-4 is to hike to N/S Brothers, Coe and Fort.

On 9/9 as Day-1 hike, I led the hike to Bigelow. Unfortunately, the weather forecast wasn't good. Precip was 60%! We started hike without rain but after grabbing 3rd summit, it rained heavily and we were soaked and totally wet at the end of hike. At every step, I heard the water sound between socks and shoes which was awful!

We started hike at 8:33AM from Horns Pond Trail at Stratton Brook Rd. I parked my car at the end of Stratton Brook Road. This trailhead is further end after passing AT trailhead.

Then, we reached to the 1st trail junction between Horns Pond Tr & Fire Warden's Tr at 9:23AM. The distance is 1.6 miles, so we kept very good hiking pace.

We continued hike and the trail merged to AT before reaching Horns Pond. This was around 10:30AM. We took a bunch of pictures at Pond as well as Lean-tos. Then we got the summit of The Horns at 11:10AM.
We continued hike toward East on AT to peakbag West Peak (at 12:30PM) as well as Avery Peak (at 1:05PM). Then, we went back 0.4 miles, hiked out on Fire Wardens' Tr to get back to the parking lot.
We completed hike at 3:12PM.

Total hiking mileage was 12.2 miles which took us 6 hours 38min per my GPS. So it was 2mph hiking pace. We could do this because it was raining and we seldom stopped and ate something.
