Ascent Trip ReportI set up 4 consecutive days' day hike plans in Maine between 9/9-12 2010. Ed.P joined my hiking events.
Day-1 is to hike to Begelow Range in order to cover 3 peaks: The Horns, West Peak and Avery Peak. Day-2 is to hike to Saddleback / Saddleback-the Horns in Rangeley Day-3 is to hike to Mt Kathadin to peakbag Hamlin, Baxter and Pamola Peaks. Day-4 is to hike to N/S Brothers, Coe and Fort.
On 9/10 as Day-2 hike, I led the hike to Saddleback Mtn to cover 2 peaks. Unfortunately, the weather forecast wasn't perfect. Precip was 30% and all day cloudy. We started hike without rain and we seldom had rain actually, however at higher elevation was very foggy and too windy. I was very scared to hike because of high wind, but we completed our hike successfully. But it's unpleasant hike. One good lucky thing was that we met 3 mooses (1 mom + 2 kids moose) at the base of Saddleback Mountain.
The uniqueness of this hike was to use Ski Trail instead of AT. By doing this, we can save a lot of hiking mileage. Since we needed to drive 3.5 hours to get to Millinocket after this hike (Day-3 & Day-4 hikes are at Baxter State Park), we had to finish this hike as earlier as possible.
We started hike at 7:50AM. After we started hike, we started to see clouds, fog at the higher elevation. Higher we went up, less views at we could get unfortunately. Moreover, it was very windy and we had no place to take a break and eat something. Very less locations under treeline once we hiked in to Saddleback and between Saddleback peak and The Horn peak.
We reached to Saddleback summit at 9:06AM which took us only 1 hour 15 mins or so. Then, we continued hike to The Horns summit and we got there at 10:02AM. We came back to the Saddleback Mtn at 11:03AM and got back to the parking lot before noon time.
It's approximately 6.8 miles with just below 4 hours hike. It was 2mph pace hike.
