Ascent Trip Report

Arrived at Massie Gap parking lot at 10:45am on a beautiful Sunday morning. Started on the Rhododendron Trail to the AT, over Wilburn Ridge, and up the Mt Rodgers spur trail. Arrived at the summit about 1:45pm, at lunch, and got back to Massie Gap at approx 4:45pm. It was Labor day weekend, and there were LOTS of people on the trail. Also saw several wild ponies and some of the brave folks fed them carrots. I was not one of them. We walked right past a couple sleeping horses just off the trail. Although there are relatively few steep sections, the trail contains a combination of large rocks and loose gravel, making foot travel a bit tricky (very easy to twist an ankle). Because of this and the sheer length (8+ miles), I'd have to catagorize it as "mildly strenuous". The look and feel of the trail is unique. Most of the trail snakes through grassy meadows and, other than the summit area which is densely wooded, the views are incredible.
