Ascent of Cowhorn Mountain on 2010-09-02
|Date:||Thursday, September 2, 2010|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||7664 ft / 2335 m|
Ascent Trip ReportI accessed Cowhorn Mtn from Hwy 138 and the signed turn off for Windigo Pass. Drive all the way out to the pass on a good gravel road and park where the PCT crosses the road. I hiked north on the PCT about 4 miles to a saddle on the southwest side of Cowhorn Mtn. Here I picked up a nice climber's trail that goes up the southwest ridge of Cownhorn Mtn. The trail is steep but easy to follow directly up to the summit block. The last 80 ft requires a little route finding up the northwest side of the summit. It is not technical unless you want it to be, but some would consider this a rock scramble. Great views south to Mt Thielsen and north to the Three Sisters area. Coming down the ridge, the rounded rock cinders added some excitement to foot placements.
