Ascent Trip ReportA short moderately steep climb from the west side ..... 1 mile, 1 hour RT. Read this TR together with the one for Kohelepelepe.
After the failed attempt on Kohelepelepe Rose and I drove hwy #72 from the Halona blowhole lookout up the east coast to the Makapuu(bulging eye) Head Lookout (the Island's furthest east point just where the hwy bends left/down)). There is plenty of parking, this was the TH for my climb.
The trail climbs/winds east along the edge of the cliff to the summit, generally following a water pipe and a utility line and where necessary stays right to avoid the vertical rocky cliff. At places there is more than one trail, I favored the right in order to avoid the cliff. The trail is moderately steep with a few spots requiring some scrambling.
The summit, capped with a concrete bunker, offers views in all directions, the lighthouse (closed to the public) is clearly in view. This apparently is one of the better places to view the Humpback Whales during the migration period of mid-fall/early-spring.
I returned the same way , however one can continue east/descend to the cliff above the lighthouse, then right clockwise down the road to a parking next to hwy #72, then up hwy #72 back to the lookout and the start of your hike ..... for a 3 mile loop.
I should also note that most hikers use the road to get to the summit and stay away from the trail I used .... a 600' climb and approx 3 1/2 mile RT.
From here we drove back down hwy #72 to Koko Head.
