Ascent Trip ReportPart of a family vacation and grand tour of Texas, State high points and the Rockies.
At last a proper hike to a State Highpoint in the midwest. We took the southern approach: Harney Peak Trail Number 9 from Sylvan Lake. The distance ia about 3.5 miles one way with 1,100 feet of elevation gain, it is necessary to self-register when one enters the Black Elk Wilderness. A well maintained trail with stunning views along and at the top even though the summit is actually lower than the treeline. The benchmark is a little way west of the lookout tower.
