Ascent Trip Report

Parked at Trampas Lake Trailhead at the end of Forest Road 207. Gradual climb for the first 3 1/2 miles, then a series of slightly steeper switchbacks; about six miles to the first of the Lakes, one of the most beautiful spots in the state of New Mexico with steep cliffs surrounding the Lakes on three sides.

The day I climbed, a Santa Fe national guard unit had climbed to the lakes as part of summer training exercises. I'm not used to military politeness--at least 50 soldiers sirred me as I passed on the way up. I had a brief conversation with one of the officers on the way up--he was impressed by my upward pace. I ran into him again at the unit's base camp--about two miles from the trailhead--and we talked some more. Finally he said, "I probably shouldn't ask you this--forgive me if it's impolite--but how old are you?" "I'll be 63 in two months," I replied. I guess the geezer mountaineer can still out walk some of his 20-something soldiers.
