Ascent Trip ReportMy family took one of first long summer vacations in 1957, driving from Morristown, N.J. to Gatlinburg, Tenn. My parents were impressed by the concept of Clingmans Dome as the highest peak in the area, but the reality of it was a bit underwhelming: drive to a crowded parking lot; walk up a short path; views no better than those available at many other nearby locations.
