Ascent Trip ReportHiked from Pole Creek TH to Soap Creek on the first evening (about one hour) and camped in the forest. On the second day, we hiked up to our base camp at about 8,000 between Middle and South Sisters. There are notorious thunderstorms this time of year so we camped in a basin below a terminal moraine.
From camp we donned our spikes, ropes and helmets and climbed the Hayden Glacier up to the Northern Saddle between Middle and Prouty and scrambled up the ridge to the summit. We encountered one steep snow section which we fixed a line for our group to hand-line descend.
There is particular rockfall hazard in this high snow field area from parties (our in our case dogs) that happen to be climbing above (fortunately, we got up and out before the dog could launch any missiles). Wear a helmet and check out what is going on high on the mountain before trundling up the snow gully.
